It looks like Uzo Aduba from Orange is the New Black wasn’t always the successful Emmy winner she is today. The actress, who just nabbed her first Emmy for her role as Crazy Eyes in the hit Netflix series, was not always successful. She was turned down more times than she can count when she auditioned for roles. But it looks like she gets the last laugh – and an Emmy to display.
“I went to an open call they had in Boston for a production, and I waited all day in this long line. I sang ‘Amazing Grace’ and they were like, ‘Thank you, next,’ Aduba says of her open casting call audition for a role in the hit Broadway production, Rent. Even though the producers of the show turned her down for a role she really wanted, it’s still one of her favorite shows on Broadway.
“My sisters and I skipped school…and we got that soundtrack, and I fell in love with it. We went to see the show with my family, and I remember seeing it – this was before I even knew you could be an artist for a living – and I was so captivated. I had seen other shows before, but I was like, whatever that is, I would love to do something like that,” Aduba says of the production.
The actress may not have made her big debut on Broadway as a character in Rent, but she’s not doing so badly for herself now. Despite that rejection – and many others – she’s on top of the world right now. Her role as Crazy Eyes just earned her an Emmy, and that’s not something all actors can say. Some people work their entire lives without ever winning an award. Not Aduba, however. She’s one of the talented few that are recognized right away.
