Rivera received a football scholarship at the University of California, Berkeley, where during his three years as a linebacker, he led the Golden Bears in tackles.
Rivera won a number of accolades for his performance during his final season in 1983, including the Pop Warner Trophy, the Pac-10 Football Defensive Player of the Year award alongside Arizona linebacker Ricky Hunley, and MVP of the East-West Shrine Game.
The Chicago Bears selected Rivera in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft, and he went on to play special team and linebacker for them.
When the Bears overcame the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX in 1985, Rivera made history as the first American of Puerto Rican heritage to win a Super Bowl. In 1988, he was voted the team’s Man of the Year. The following year, he was given the Ed Block Courage Award.
Rivera participated in 137 games with 62 starts, 392 tackles, 7.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, and nine interceptions before ending his career following the 1992 campaign
As a quality control coach for the Bears, Rivera started his coaching career in 1997. Two years later, Rivera became the linebackers coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2004, he returned to the Bears as the defensive coordinator.
The next season, he was recognized by the PFWA as Assistant Coach of the Year, and he assisted in the selection of linebacker Brian Urlacher as Defensive Player of the Year.
The club participated in Super Bowl XLI in 2006. During this period, Rivera also conducted interviews for a few head coaching positions. He began teaching linebackers for the San Diego Chargers in 2007, and a year later he was elevated to the position of defensive coordinator.
Following three years with the Chargers, Rivera was brought on as head coach of the Carolina Panthers, where he went on to become the franchise’s all-time winningest coach.
In addition, he led the team to a Super Bowl 50 trip and was named the 2013 and 2015 NFL Coach of the Year. Due to new owner David Tepper’s need for change, Rivera was sacked midway through the 2019 campaign. He was hired as Washington’s head coach in 2020.
Despite receiving a squamous cell carcinoma diagnosis that same year, he was declared cancer-free in early 2021.
With his two trips to the playoffs with Carolina in 2014 and Washington in 2020, Rivera is the only NFL coach in history to have guided a team with a losing record more than once. At the end of the 2023 NFL season, he was let go from Washington.
