A Queensland bakery has taken out the title of Australia’s best meat pie.
Paradise Bakehouse at Moore Park Beach and Innes Park in the Bundaberg Region beat hundreds of bakeries across the country in the annual Official Great Aussie Pie Competition.
Bakeries are allowed to submit a mince, chunky and combination pie into the competition for consideration for the top title of Australia’s best plain pie.
They must contain either beef, veal, or lamb. No vegetables are allowed except for onion.
Paradise Bakehouse, run by Huyen Nguyen and her husband Lam Khong, won with its chunky steak pie.
Ms Nguyen told news.com.au their head chef Lam Khong makes the pies with all his love and passion for baking.
She said they were judged on pastry, filling, taste and colour.
“In my opinion, putting love and heart is one of the most important keys to make a good pie, as well as good food,” Ms Nguyen said.
On top of that she credits customer feedback and her mum’s recipes for helping them score the title of best meat pie in the country.
“We so proud of the Paradise team,” she said, also thanking their customers, family and friends for support. “We could not achieve it without you all.”
Country Cob Bakery in the Melbourne suburb of Springvale came runner-up with its mince-chunky combination pie.
Paradise Bakehouse previously won the best gourmet pie in 2021, which was claimed by Rolling Pin Pies & Cakes in Ocean Grove, Victoria this year for its chunky beef and bacon pie.
A total of 1500 pies were judged over the four-day competition at Fine Food Australia in Sydney.
Winners were announced across 19 different categories.
