He later enrolled at Lindbergh High School in the suburb of Renton as a freshman before transferring to O’Dea High School, a Catholic all-boys high school located in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood. He eventually graduated from O’Dea High School and was named Seattle Times “City Athlete of the Year” as a senior.

Later on, he attended the University of Nevada, Reno on a scholarship and played for the Nevada Wolf Pack. He subsequently graduated with a degree in human development and family studies.

  • After his father signed with the Los Angeles Express of the United States Football League (USFL) in 1983, the family shifted to the United States.
  • During his school years, Nate Burleson was on the school’s track and field team and competed as a sprinter and hurdler. In 1999, he went on to win the state title in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 38.70 seconds. Also, he finished 8th in the 110-meter hurdles as a junior.
  • He initially wanted to attend the University of Washington (his father’s alma mater) but was not offered a football scholarship. So, he went on to attend the University of Nevada, Reno.
  • Playing for the Nevada Wolf Pack, he made 138 receptions (the second highest in NCAA history) in the 2002 season and led the NCAA in both receiving yards and receptions per game in his senior year. He made a total of 248 receptions for a total of 3,293 yards and 22 touchdowns while at the university and was named first-team All-America by the American Football Coaches Association, All-WAC by the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), and team MVP, and was named second-team All-America by The Sporting News and CNN/SI.
  • Nate and his brother Kevin Burleson are one of the only two sibling duos in which one brother played in the NFL while the other played in the NBA.
