Vieira was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and brought up in nearby East Providence. She is the daughter of homemaker Mary Elsie (Rosa) and medical doctor Edwin Vieira, both of whom are first-generation Portuguese Americans. She is the youngest of the four siblings, the other three being older brothers. Vieira’s grandparents were all from the Azores, three from Faial Island, one of the archipelago’s nine islands. In Portuguese, the surname Vieira means “scallop.” They moved to New England in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, settling in and around Providence, Rhode Island. Vieira was raised in the Roman Catholic faith, but in recent interviews, she has stated that she has “spirituality, not religion.” Vieira graduated in 1971 from the Lincoln School, a Quaker all-girls offshoot of the Moses Brown School in Providence. In 1975, she earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Tufts University. She is a television host and journalist from the United States. She eventually got a job as an investigative reporter at WCBS-TV in New York City, where she worked from 1979 to 1982. She rose to national prominence as a CBS reporter based in the Chicago bureau between 1982 and 1984. Later, she collaborated as a correspondent for West 57th and 60 Minutes, a national news magazine show. Her final assignment at CBS was as a co-anchor of the CBS Morning News from 1992 to 1993. She joined ABC the following year as one of six regular correspondents for the news magazine show Turing Point (1994–99). Simultaneously, Meredith agreed to host the Lifetime Network’s Intimate Portrait, which premiered on January 3, 1995 and ran until August 28, 2004. She was also the original moderator and co-host of The View, an ABC daylight hours talk show that aired from August 11, 1997, to June 9, 2006.
